Gary Police Sgt. William Fazekas was responding to reports of an active shooter when he was wounded by shots fired from inside vehicles involved in a traffic accident.

An Indiana police officer was shot and wounded while he was responding to a call concerning gunfire Monday.

A Gary police officer reported an active shooter situation just before 1 p.m. as his colleagues were handing parking violations, WBBM-TV reports. Sgt. William Fazekas was in the vicinity of the call when he witnessed a two-vehicle traffic accident and decided to investigate.

When Fazekas turned on his emergency lights, shots were fired from inside the vehicles. At least one of the shots struck the officer in the left shoulder.

Fazekas returned fire, but authorities couldn't confirm if he struck anyone. One suspect, who was uninjured, was apprehended, while another suspect fled the scene.

Following the shooting, Fazekas was taken to a local hospital, where his condition was stabilized. He then was transferred to a Chicago facility, and officials said he was in good spirtis.

Gary police and Lake County sheriff's deputies are conducting a manhunt for the second suspect.

Fazekas is a 32-year veteran of the Gary Police Department. He currently works as an investigator with the violent crimes division.
